By MICHAEL MAROTHELEI and ROBYN RYANJEIAssociated PressThe Walt Disney Co. is developing a new animated feature film based on a Walt Disney character named Coco that’s set in a new world and is inspired by the animated wallpaper of the same name, a new report said.
The Walt Scott Co. and Legendary Pictures will produce the project with animation studio A-Team Animation, the studio behind “Walt Disney’s Big Hero 6” and “Big Hero 6: The First Movie,” according to a document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
It’s the latest in a string of new projects from Disney that include the animated television series “Big Little Lies” and a new Disney TV series that will premiere in 2018.
“Disney’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse have returned to life as part of the Walt Disney Animation Studio, with their characters returning in a brand new, completely new, and totally original animated movie,” the document states.
“The film will be a totally new experience for all of the fans and Disney fans everywhere, and the story will be told in a way that will make the movie even more unique.”
Coco, a 16-year-old girl from the fictional town of Coco, is a native of Coco Village, a fictional Disney town in Mexico, according to the documents.
The project will be released as an “epic, full length film” sometime this summer, it said.
It’s not known whether Disney will be paying for the film.
A spokeswoman for Legendary Pictures said the studio would not comment.
